New Hire Announced at University Of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Inova (Institute of Visual Arts) Galleries

The Peck School of the Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) is thrilled to announce that Sara Krajewski will join the School as the Director of Inova (Institute of Visual Arts) Galleries. Ms. Krajewski currently serves as the Curator at the Henry Art Gallery, University of Washington, Seattle, and has held curatorial positions at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art and the Harvard University Art Museums. She will begin her new role at Inova on July 15, 2012.

 

"Reestablishing Inova's preeminent position is critically important to securing Milwaukee's role as a leader in contemporary art," said Wade Hobgood, Dean of the UWM Peck School of the Arts. "I believe that Sara's leadership and demonstrated experience in contemporary curatorial practices, non-profit gallery management, fundraising, and community outreach will allow Inova to widen and deepen its significant impact here in Milwaukee and around the world."

Graduate Work by Former Lincoln, Nebraska Resident Diana M. Sanchez Featured in UWM Peck School of the Arts Spring MA/MFA Exhibition I

MILWAUKEE (March 6, 2012) — The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts announces the opening of the Department of Art and Design's Spring MA/MFA Exhibition I on March 9th. The exhibition will feature artwork by former Lincoln resident Diana M. Sanchez, and represents her graduate work in the Peck School of the Arts' Department of Art and Design. The exhibition also includes work by Andrea Avery, Jamie Lea Bertsch, and Amy Magnuson.

Diana M. Sanchez, Chimera

Diana Sanchez’s current work, titled Chimera, explores, through photography, fanciful habitats in zoological gardens and natural history museums. Five 40” x 31” color photographs that reveal the human artifice in these spaces, will be on view at the INOVA gallery at the Peck School of Art from March 9th to March 31st, during the MA/MFA exhibition.

MILWAUKEE (March 6, 2012) — The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts announces the opening of the Department of Art and Design's Spring MA/MFA Exhibition I on March 9th. The exhibition will feature artwork by Watertown native Amy Magnuson, and represents her graduate work in the Peck School of the Arts' Department of Art and Design. The exhibition also includes work by Andrea Avery, Jamie Lea Bertsch and Diana M. Sanchez.

Amy Magnuson, Resurgence

Amy Magnuson’s paintings and drawings use metaphoric architectural imagery in order to narrate a spiritual and physical dynamic. The abstractly constructed structures are characterized by chaotic compilations of lines. The forms fluctuate within the stillness of the landscape in which the structures reside. The compositions depict close and distant viewpoints to reveal interior and exterior identities and relationships.

The exhibition will feature artwork by Campbellsport native Jamie Lea Bertsch, and represents her graduate work in the Peck School of the Arts' Department of Art and Design. The exhibition also includes work by Andrea Avery, Amy Magnuson and Diana M. Sanchez.

Jamie Lea Bertsch, cast on/bound off

Bertsch’s installation cast on/bound off materializes memory through accumulating, disassembling, and reassembling her own art objects and personal belongings - a loved quilt, cherished linens, generations of past work. The resulting layered, hand-knit work interrupts functionality. Her installation focuses on ideas of obsession and luxurious abundance in an effort to re-remember, transform, and determine the thresholds of comfort. Cast on/bound off is an ode to process, using the humble stitch to reveal an obsessive opulence.

The exhibition will feature artwork by Chetek native Andrea Avery, and represents her graduate work in the Peck School of the Arts' Department of Art and Design. The exhibition also includes work by Jamie Lea Bertsch, Amy Magnuson and Diana M. Sanchez.

Andrea Avery, Curtail Sonnet

Curtail Sonnet, the latest exhibition of works by Andrea Avery, includes a monumental number of sculpted parrots heads, a soft whispering silk birdcage, hand-sewn narratives on found objects, and screen printed walls which surround the viewer and transform the gallery space. This collection explores the cultural yearning for a medium of surveillance that stems from the human impulse to spy and eavesdrop, as the result is seen through the eyes of a woman protagonist. The exhibition is for the completion of her MFA degree at the UW-Milwaukee.

Internationally celebrated cellist, Robert Cohen, joins Fine Arts Quartet

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts is pleased to announce that Robert Cohen has joined the Fine Arts Quartet as its newest cellist. He will be playing with the Quartet in their upcoming concert on January 29, 2012 at 3pm, at the Helen Bader Concert Hall on UWM's campus.   

 

Mr. Cohen made his concerto debut at the age of twelve at the Royal Festival Hall in London, and throughout his distinguished international career he has been hailed as one of the foremost cellists of our time. Invited to perform concertos world-wide by conductors Claudio Abbado, Kurt Masur, Riccardo Muti, and Sir Simon Rattle, Cohen has also collaborated in chamber music with many eminent artists such as Yehudi Menuhin and the Amadeus String Quartet, with whom he recorded the Schubert Cello Quintet on Deutsche Grammophon. At age nineteen, Cohen recorded the Elgar Concerto with the London Philharmonic Orchestra for the EMI label, and since then, has recorded much of the cello repertoire for Sony, Decca, DGG, EMI, and BIS. Cohen, who studied with the legendary artists William Pleeth, Jacqueline du Pré, and Mstislav Rostropovich, is an inspirational teacher who has given master classes all over the world. In addition to joining UWM, he is also a Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London and at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, and is director of the Charleston Manor Festival in the south of England.  

Peck School Art & Design students win snow sculpting competition in China

Four students from the UW-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts won first place in the Harbin Engineering University International Collegiate Snow Sculpture Competition in China! The participating students were Gregory Martens, Matthew Lee, Rachel Kedinger and Ruby Jaeger.

There were 49 teams (9 international and 40 domestic teams) in the competition. Our students did a remarkable job, turning a huge block of snow into a fine piece of art in a little more than three days in 0 to -20 degree Celsius temperatures. The title of the UWM team's sculpture is Starting Anew, and depicts early spring scenery in Wisconsin. Our students not only performed exceptionally well in the competition, but they were also great ambassadors for UWM and our country. UWM Peck School of the Arts Department of Dance receives National Association of Schools of Dance accreditation!

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts is excited to announce that the Department of Dance has received accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD). NASD is an association of approximately 72 schools of dance, primarily at the collegiate level, but also including postsecondary non-degree-granting schools of dance. It is the national accrediting agency for dance and dance-related disciplines.

 

"It is an incredible honor to be included among the elite few accredited schools of dance in the U.S.," said Simone Ferro, Chair of the Department of Dance. "I would like to thank former faculty member Janet Lilly for her leadership in this process; Peck School of the Arts Dean Wade Hobgood and Associate Dean Scott Emmons for their support and encouragement; and our faculty, staff and students for all their hard work in making this possible."
