On Wednesday, May 14, 2014, UWM's LGBT Resource Center presented its fifth annual Lavendar Graduation Ceremony. More than 25 graduating students came together and reflected on their experiences at UW-Milwaukee.
This ceremony also presented several awards, one of which was given to the Peck School's Assistant Professor of Directing, Tony Horne! Horne received the Dr. Jeff Merrick Leadership Award. The award is named for the UWM History Professor Emeritus who presented the keynote address at the first Lavender Ceremony in 2010. From the LGBT Resource Center, this award is "presented to a member of the faculty or staff at UWM who has shown dedication & support for LGBTQIA people through taking initiative in order to stand up and speak out against issues of homophobia, transphobia, heterosexism, and cisgenderism."
Horne states, "I was humbled and honored to receive the Dr. Jeff Merrick Leadership Award for my work in the theatre. It was a complete surprise to me. I deeply appreciate the LGBT Resource Center and those who nominated me for this award." Congratulations, Tony!
