UW-Milwaukee’s very own member of the theatre faculty, Alvaro Saar Rios, will be premiering a work done with composer Dr. Mary Carol Warwick titled, Rapunzel, in Houston on January 30 at the Heinen Theatre.
Alvaro Saar Rios is a lecturer and teaches Playwriting and Analysis. He has an MFA in Writing for the Stage & Screen from Northwestern University. He is the co-founder of the Royal Mexican Players, a national touring performance troupe. He is the author of a variety of plays such as The Mole Hill Stories, The Crazy Mexican Show and One Hot Texican Summer. He has performed all over the country and currently has commissions from both First State in Wisconsin and the Houston Grand Opera. He is the Librettist of this production, having written the libretto, or the text, used in the performance.
Rapunzel, a young girl, falls in love with her prince charming. She must make the choice between the security of what she knows or the danger of what is a mystery.
This performance of Rapunzel, a children’s classic, is a fully-staged, 45 minute opera packed with excellent consumes, set design and music. It is sung in English, designed for today’s audiences.
