I've known Mike Brenner, owner of Brenner Brewing Company and the former owner of Hotcakes Gallery, for an age. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I think I knew he played accordion. But I had no Earthly notion that he could sing.
When I arrived at the Marshall Building during Gallery Night last night, there he was signing and squeezing. This little discovery was not the only surprise of the night. It was part of art$support , a citywide series of pop-up performances designed to raise funds for more than 100 art-related nonprofits.
Youngblood Theater performed in the pouring rain. Scott Emmons, dean of Peck School of the Arts, played on behalf of the Creative Alliance in the Third Ward and at Nessum Dorma. The Figureheads did some impromptu rap at the Wicked Hop. The Haggerty Museum of Art projected Kevin Miyazaki's "Perimeter" photographs on a Third Ward building. As I write this, there is a mime at the Tosa farmer's market, according to the group on Twitter.
