What a lovely and generous project. Every year, the Portrait Society Gallery commissions an artist-made winter chapel, a place for reflection and quietude during these months of harsh weather and inwardness in the Midwest. This year's chapel, one of my favorites, was created by Kevin Giese. It is so simple, constructed with a curved wall and hollow, hand-stitched birch trees.
Debra Brehmer, the gallery director at the Portrait Society, hopes to expand the poject to other spaces throughout the city next year and to collaborate with architects and other institutions as well.
