Welcome to the first edition of Local Beat, a new feature devoted to music news in Wisconsin and, particularly, Milwaukee.
Bands on film
Cream City Soundcheck, a local music video series, is ready for its close-up. Launched last year by Jenny Plevin and Ryan Sarnowski, co-directors of the university's Doc UWM documentary media center, Soundcheck gets film students access to interview and film local and touring bands around town.
Through a partnership with the Pabst Theater, Riverside Theater and Turner Hall Ballroom, "the idea became to show off Milwaukee in a different way," Plevin said following the first documentary class of the semester. "One of the things that really speaks to a city's culture is its music scene," Sarnowski added.
