Ralph Evans, first violinist of the Fine Arts Quartet since 1982, and I hadn’t done an interview in several years. Wolfgang Laufer, FAQ cellist since 1979, had been the FAQ’s spokesman and de facto leader.
But Laufer died suddenly in June, at 64. His big personality left a big gap beyond the musical side of the enterprise. Evans stepped into the breach to give an interview in advance of the quartet’s season opener at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25...

UWM Peck School of the Arts Department of Dance receives National Association of Schools of Dance accreditation!
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts is excited to announce that the Department of Dance has received accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD). NASD is an association of approximately 72 schools of dance, primarily at the collegiate level, but also including postsecondary non-degree-granting schools of dance. It is the national accrediting agency for dance and dance-related disciplines.
"It is an incredible honor to be included among the elite few accredited schools of dance in the U.S.," said Simone Ferro, Chair of the Department of Dance. "I would like to thank former faculty member Janet Lilly for her leadership in this process; Peck School of the Arts Dean Wade Hobgood and Associate Dean Scott Emmons for their support and encouragement; and our faculty, staff and students for all their hard work in making this possible."
"This distinction validates the stellar reputation of our dance faculty, staff and students in the Peck School of the Arts," said Dean Wade Hobgood.

On Stage 9/20: Classical music returns to Milwaukee in force

The Fine Arts Quartet returns this week too, performing a concert Sept. 25, with guest cellist Desmond Hoebig. Hoebig, violinists Ralph Evans and Efim Boico and violist Nicolò Eugelmi will play Haydn’s String Quartet in D major and classic film composer Bernard Herrmann’s Echoes for String Quartet. Guest pianist Menahem Pressler will make five for Dvorak’s Piano Quintet in A major. All Fine Arts Quartet concerts this year are free to the public, in commemoration of the Quartet’s 65th anniversary. Tickets are still required for the 3 p.m. concert, though, so call the box office at (414) 229-4308 to ensure you have a seat at the freshly refurbished Zelazo Center, 2419 E. Kenwood Blvd., on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus.

Your Mother Dances' Full-Bodied Movement. Talented Milwaukee company presents 'Stripped Roundly'

If you heard that Elizabeth Johnson and Luc Vanier, the artistic leaders of Your Mother Dances, were leaving town, don't worry. They're staying, and as I watched a rehearsal of their upcoming concert “Stripped Roundly,” it was clear to me that this is a real dance company. Most of the dancers are UW-Milwaukee grads who've worked together for years, and they completely inhabit Johnson's and Vanier's dances. Though radically different in style, both choreographers create difficult, full-bodied movement that is impossible to hide behind. Absorbed in steps that take everything they can give, the dancers look nakedly human. To lose this company would be a shame.
The performances take place in UWM's Mitchell Hall, Room 254—a spacious, high-ceilinged studio with seats on all sides. The dancers are close. You can catch their sweat...

MUSIC FACULTY - Milwaukee legend recalls poetry’s relationship with music

The fusion of poetry and music is one of human civilization’s earliest forms of artistic expression, going as far as back as the illustrated walls of prehistoric caves, Native American ghost dances and Charles Cros’ experiments with art songs throughout the 1800s. But the idiom – “a sonic binding” of poetry’s word, as UW-Milwaukee’s Dr. Martin Jack Rosenblum calls it – is better traced via recordings. With numerous theories emanating from the varied approaches that poets and musicians have taken over time to differing results, Dr. Rosenblum continues to shine a light on poetry and music in his scholarship and personal artistry. Well into his 60s, Rosenblum has lived through the majority of the idiom’s important moments and is compelled to recount some of history’s most significant examples...

Rock and Roll 101
We’ll learn about a classroom where the college and the rock-and-roll world meet. Martin Jack Rosenblum is a Senior Lecturer in Music History & Literature at UW-Milwaukee’s Peck School of the Arts. He runs the school’s Certificate Program in Rock and Roll Studies. He’s also been the historian for Harley-Davidson, and is the author of 20 books of poetry and more than a dozen CDs of original songs. His newest album is called Ice Thorn Singles (Collection). He tells Mitch Teich where the term "Rock and Roll" comes from in Supplemental Audio below.

Jan Serr’s “About Face” at UWM

In preparing to review Jan Serr’s exhibition (through Oct. 1 at UW-Milwaukee’s Inova/Arts Center gallery), I recalled her large, expertly crafted landscapes. I have a problem reviewing images that lack narrative content, and in Serr’s dense world, devoid of figures, I found myself wondering if the artist was hiding in the slick and perfectly formed foliage.
I changed course when I saw, at the Tory Folliard Gallery, her recent sunny monotypes, in which people populate beaches and women bask in flowery fields. Did they signal a major change? I headed to the Inova Gallery on campus at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to see Serr’s Continuum 10 offering, aptly titled About Face. It’s about faces, and perhaps about changing direction...

Accordionist Stas Venglevski's Classical Side
'Music From Almost Yesterday' highlights Milwaukee master

Look out, Lawrence Welk: There is a new accordion hero in town—Stas Venglevski. And his repertoire is, if anything, wider than Welk's songbook. Born in Moldova in the former Soviet Union, Venglevski won awards in his homeland for his mastery of the bayan, a Russian button accordion with greater range than its Western counterparts. He didn't confine himself to playing bars and outdoor festivals, though he's never been adverse to either. A graduate of Moscow's Russian Academy of Music, with a master's degree in music, Venglevski studied under the renowned Russian bayanist Friedrich Lips....
