Music faculty Sheila Feay-Shaw’s report “Cultural Consciousness in Secondary Music Education: Issues of Pedagogy and Philosphy” is being utilized in conjunction with the efforts of the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards to revise the national standards for arts education in the United States. Her report, along with the work of several of her colleagues, is being reviewed and summarized in order to create a series of recommendations about what constitutes developmentally appropriate Pre-K to grade 14 music education practice. NCCAS members will then refer to these recommendations in their revisions of the U.S. National Standards for Arts Education. Feay-Shaw’s research will help to ensure that the new standards are aligned with current knowledge in the developmental sciences, particularly as they relate to music education.
